Today is the last day of 2011, it is called "Ohmisoka".
"Misoka" means the last day of month, so "Ohmisoka" is the last day of the last month of the year.
New Year day is especiallly important for every japanese.
We clean up our house, prepare new clothes, special dishes, and new year decoration.
We wait for the moment of New Year with our family.
Have a good New Year's Eve,
and wish you a Happy New Year!

Hello again!
返信削除In England we have a party and everybody counts down together to midnight (10...9...8....) do you do that in Japan too?
Thank you for this post and have a great Ohmisoka! (Thank for the new word!)

Hello, Marcus!
返信削除Yes, young people have count down party with friends.
But most traditional way to meet New Year is spending time with family. At the temple, monks beat the big bell 108 times to midnight.
This is called "joya no kane", and 108 is a number equal to human desires.
We hear the sound of "joya no kane", and wait for New Year.
